Cyprus is a football-mad country and as its First Division leaders Apoel took another step closer to this season’s title with a 2-1 win over rivals Apollon on Sunday, a new documentary claims all is not well with the beautiful game on the island.
As we read in the "GREEK REPORTER", the Mediterranean country has the distinction of having the “most foreign” league in the the world, with 80.2 percent of all minutes played by non-Cypriot players, says football channel COPA90.
In a short documentary released late last week, filmmakers reveal that the country’s national side is suffering as home-grown talent is not given a chance to improve and develop as clubs merely buy in foreign players.
That the Cyprus Football Association fines clubs €1,500 for not fielding a minimum of two Cypriot players does not deter some, with the bigger sides simply playing the fine and fielding who they like.
Cyprus’ national side has never qualified for the finals of the World Cup or the European Championship.
