A snake was found next to the trolleys of a supermarket in Thessaloniki on Monday, causing panic among the customers.

A volunteer from the Action for Wildlife was called to save the day and collect the appoximately 1,5-metre snake.

According to Stavros Kalpakis from Action for Wildlife, the reptile was a harmless Dolichophis, which was found injured, probably by the supermarket trolley. "The snake was transferred to the organisation's conservation centre and afterwards it was released in the area of the Delta of Axios" said Kalpakis, adding that incidents with snakes in the city increase every spring when the weather get hotter and they wake up from hibernation.

"Usually snakes are found in city parks," he said and advised those who come across a snake to leave it alone and call the Action for Wildlife and the volunteers found on the website for the Greek herpetofauna.gr
